For those less interested in Windows and more focused on Linux or Pi versions of ham radio software, please take a look at https://getpat.io/ . The latest release is on github at https://github.com/la5nta/pat/releases Latest is v0.12.1. It is a command-line / Web Gui version of a Winlink mail client that now has the ability to use all of the forms available in Winlink. It can operate over telnet to check basic operations and day to day use, but also has interfaces into ARDOP, AX25, PACTOR, Winmor and also has access to a serial TNC. I have tried this on Windows but do not have a Linux machine around to try out. Linux users may be interested in this google group discussion about using PAT with direwolf https://groups.google.com/g/pat-users/c/7rnqVhx2zR4 If you give it a try, please report back your results.

I suggest new, but it has been around a long time, but underutilized and not advertised. The system is based at Ballantrae as VA3BAL-10 and run by COARC. The antenna is on a 90M antenna and has great coverage. The Frequency is on 145.630MHz The system requires you to change how you access systems as it is also part of an older packet radio system with multiple connections across the COARC infrastructure. To access the system you must change approach slightly. Once you open a Packet Winlink connection instead of choosing DIRECT, you need to choose SCRIPT in the connection type. You can then enter a new script by clicking on Add Script Add the following lines into the script, name it VA3BAL c va3bal CONNECTED connect RMSBAL Connected Now you can click on the Start to make the connection using the connection script you just entered. If you have questions, either respond through the forum or at emcomm@yrarc.org 73 Mike VA3MCT

This is the link to the 3D printed coils used in the multi-band portable dipole that I presented at the September 2021 club meeting (online). https://barriearc.com/builders-group/projects/antennas/waxtenna-prd/download/waxtenna-prd.pdf And also the video of the talk. I will post the slides shortly. 73 Mike VA3MCT

Picked up a couple of hamsticks recently, but just could not tune them. I put a meter on them and no electrical connection from one end to the other. I decided to take part of the heat shrink covering off at each end and this is what I found. It turns out they were badly corroded (both ends of each pair of the dipole. So the project is now to rebuild them from scratch and see if I can resurrect them. Mike VA3MCT

Interested in making use of that old Packet Radio TNC that you have shut away in a cupboard? Then find the PSU, find those cables and get it fired up and let's build out packet radio around the GTA again. If you don't have a TNC, then there is free software available that works identically. There has been a resurgence of interest, especially for use with Winlink. Contact us to find who is working on this project and how far we have got.

In D-STAR
With the club heavily invested in D-STAR repeaters, and mobile and handheld go kits for use in the public service and ARES groups. it had become apparent that we were not making the best use of this technology. A small group of volunteers set up some D-RATS testing to use data over D-STAR. D-RATS is a computer program created by an Australian ham for computer to computer communications primarily using D-STAR data transmission, but it can also use AX.25 packet radio and wired/wi-fi Internet communications when available. It has a single user interface for chat, email, mapping, formal and information messaging and file transfer. It is also open source and runs on Windows, Linux and other platforms. In a early test, several of the volunteers set up in various locations around York Region. Some direct communications were possible, but the mountainous area we live in did cause issues for some, but communications is possible all around the region. An important finding was that D-RATS data messages run through the repeater with no further work on the repeater site/software, so that certainly provides increased coverage. More recently, several members have been testing D-RATS from their home stations both direct and through the repeater. It looks like it will be a useful tool for point-to-point communications when there is no other supporting infrastructure. Latest code is being developed here https://github.com/maurizioandreotti/D-Rats Contact our emergency communications director, Mike VA3MCT, if you'd like to be involved in the trials.

JS8CALL 40M NET - MONDAY FEB 8TH @ 7PM EDT For those who may be interested in digital modes, I will be hosting an experimental 40 m net using the js8 protocol on a frequency of 7.078 MHz which is the universal standard js8 frequency. All stations taking part are asked to use the @JSNET call to facilitate group messages. All stations taking part should attempt to space themselves out above 1000 HZ so as to not double up. All stations will be asked to check in after a brief preamble at the start of the net. I will then call the stations individually and allow them to respond. We will be using the standard normal speed which operates in 15 second windows at ~16 words per minute. Due to the slow nature of the protocol, users are encouraged to compress their text messages using unconventional slang (the same way people shorten SMS messages). For example, instead of "you" simply "u" will suffice. At the end of a transmission, all stations are encouraged to put the acronym "BTU" meaning back to you for clarity in addition to using the standard present diamond symbol that automatically indicates the end of a transmission.

If you have developed a document that shows how to get YOUR radio working wit Winlink, then please send it along to emcomm@yrarc.org so that we can add it to our repository of documentation at https://www.yrarc.org/winlink We are looking for radio settings and screenshots that could help other operators with their set up. e.g. Yaesu FT991 with soundmodem for VHF or ICOM-7300 for VARA HF Regards, Mike
